Mermaids or Gorgons

According to Greek mythology, the ancient marine deities Phorcys and his sister Ceto were the parents of the three Gorgon sisters—Medusa, Stheno, and Euryale. They were creatures with the head and upper body of a woman and the tail of a fish.
In more modern times , according to a popular Greek legend the gorgon is the sister of Alexander the Great, Thessaloniki. The legend states that Alexander, in his quest for the Fountain of Immortality, retrieved a flask of immortal water with which he bathed his sister's hair. When Alexander died, his grief-stricken sister attempted to end her life by jumping into the sea. Instead of drowning, however, she became a mermaid passing judgment on mariners throughout the centuries and across the seven seas. To the sailors who encountered her she would always pose the same question: "Is Alexander the king alive?", to which the correct answer would be "He lives and reigns and conquers the world" Given this answer she would allow the ship and her crew to sail safely away in calm seas. With any other answer she would send the ship and every sailor on board to the bottom of the sea.
Gorgons, mermaids or sirens are a part of mythologies and folk traditions of countries around the world , from ancient Assyria and Babylonia to Russia, China, Africa and Europe. Even today people claim to have seen mermaids.
What is it that fascinates us so much about these magical creatures?
What makes so many different peoples for so many centuries refer to the same creatures? Is it their awe and fear of the raging sea? Are the legends so deeply ingrained in them that in conditions of poor visibility they see a mermaid in every sea creature?

Let’s live and explore the legend of the gorgons here in Limenaria, Thasos, in the exquisite apartments of “Gorgona di Thasos”, ….. hoping that one night we may actually encounter them.
